Ice Factor students play in Canada

Back in January, a number of our present and past students (going back to our Fremont days from the 2000s and 2010s) travelled to Canada as part of the Kaurna Boomerangs. This is Australia’s first Indigenous Ice Hockey team and were set up by two ex-Fremont students, Shaquille Burgoyne and Jaidyn O’Neill.

They went on a cultural tour of Canada, taking part in several matches against an Indigenous Canadian hockey team from the Cree Nation. They also took part in cultural events and activities as well as training at the Edmonton Oilers NHL stadium, along with many other adventures around the province of Alberta.

There was TV and print media coverage of their trip, with the captain of the team, Michael Burgoyne being interviewed on Canadian morning TV.

There was also coverage in The Advertiser.

The team comprises the following PIC/ex-FECHS students:

Players

Jymain O’Neill (Year 9 in 2020)
Jordan Smith (Year 12 in 2019)
Jaidyn O’Neill (Fremont)
Michael Burgoyne (Fremont)
Cecil Buckskin (Fremont, also represented South Australia in Ice Hockey at Under 15 level while at FECHS)
Dylan Mattson (Fremont)

Assistant Team Manager

Nick Ruffino (Fremont)

It’s great to see these former students continuing with Ice Hockey, which they first got into during their time here through Ice Factor. All of these players have gone through the Ice Factor program while at our school and it has provided many opportunities for them and the hundreds of other students who have been a part of the FECHS / PIC Ice Factor program over the last 15 years.
